adminIn a statement yesterday, the head of public weather services in the Meteorological Services Department, Mr Tich Zinyemba, said the department would continue monitoring the tropical cyclone which is wreaking havoc in Mozambique and South Africa.
Two weeks ago, the department warned that low-lying areas would receive heavy rains accompanied by flash floods and thunderstorms between 13 and 25 January.
“The floods wreaking havoc in Mozambique and South Africa should warn us not to be complacent. The tropical cyclone Funso has since moved back into the Mozambique Channel, reducing the imminent danger of heavy rains over Zimbabwe,” said Mr Zinyemba.
“It should be borne in mind that tropical cyclones by their nature are unpredictable in their move-ments. Accordingly, we will continue monitoring it and issue appropriate warnings when necessary.”
He said most parts of the country would experience reduced rainfall activity up to tomorrow.
“Although there will be scattered thunderstorms from time to time in Matabeleland North, Mashonaland provinces and Harare, much of the country will experience reduced rainfall activity up to Friday.
“Farmers are therefore urged to appropriately harness the available water to keep moisture in the soil,” said Mr Zinyemba.
