ON OCTOBER 10, 1998, Ipi Tombe came into the world after being groomed by Peter Moor in Marondera. Veteran trainer Noleen Peech conditioned the filly that went on to become arguably the best horse race to emerge in Zimbabwe after she won four of her five starts at Borrowdale Park before she went to South Africa. Racing in Durban, the Zimbabwean-bred filly won the prestigious races before she was shipped to Dubai where she also held her mark as a champion. Ipi Tombe has since retired and is now a mare in the United States but her great legacy remains the pride of Zimbabwe horse-racing and tomorrow the great horse will be honoured in the Hyundai Ipi Tombe Stakes over 1600m at Borrowdale Park.
The Ipi Tombe race has attracted 11 top equine athletes at Borrowdale with stakes pegged at US$14 000 for the event carded as Race Six. At number on the race card is the chestnut gelding Alula Borelis by Lisa Harris with jockey Quinton Riddle while Macchiato (8) is from the same stable.
Trainer Kirk Swanson saddles in the seasoned Century Stand gelding Captain’s Tiger (2) and Madigan. Approval Rating, the Argentine-bred Choisir and Genepri are going to the starting stalls for the Ipi Tombe race which was rescheduled after it was washed off on the initial date.
