The Harare Residents Trust (HRT) has raised concern over the infiltration of open spaces in Warren Park D, Budiriro and Rugare residential areas and have blamed council for causing over population.
In an interview with The Herald recently, the trust’s women’s desk and livelihood officer Mrs Constance Shumba said the construction of houses in breathing spaces was affecting the sewer and drainage system.
Mrs Shumba said she observed the same situation in Chitungwiza and noted that councillors were to blame because they were allocating people stands on top of sewer pipes.
“It is the same situation in St Mary’s Chitungwiza,” she said. “This is because of corrupt councillors who allocate people stands at open spaces and people build houses on top of pipelines and when the pipelines collapse it causes serious problems.
“We see that many of the people who are facing economic challenges are the ones who use plastics to relief themselves and when it is in the evening they go and dump their human waste at Dungwiza Primary School in Chitungwiza.
“We also visited Warren Park D, there were other stands that blocked drainage systems of houses that already existed and the other challenge is that people are overcrowded in Warren Park D.”
