THE Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, in partnership with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, has started an awareness campaign as part of a nationwide effort to educate the public about the new Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency.
A B-Metro news crew caught up with Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services and RBZ officials interacting with residents at Luveve, Chigumira Shopping Centre in Bulawayo on Thursday.
Fliers explaining the new Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency were also distributed, along with specimens for residents to examine.
A resident Lloyd Makwati, applauded the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services and RBZ for launching the educational campaign, adding that the currency should not circulate only among money changers when the majority of citizens cannot access it.
“We hope this currency will help alleviate poverty, not end up circulating only among money changers. Most citizens need to be able to access it. I’m glad the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe provided this information session today, and you can even scan this flier for more details,” said Makwati.
Another resident, Shylet Moyo, also praised the campaign, saying it will help build confidence in the new currency.
“We appreciate the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services and RBZ officials for informing us about the new currency,” Moyo said.
An RBZ official, speaking on condition of anonymity for professional reasons, said the bank was satisfied with how the public was embracing the new currency.
“Embracing ZiG is crucial for our development as a nation. A strong domestic currency is essential for economic growth,” said the official.
