Residents engage security firms as thieves invade city suburb

The thieves reportedly broke into the lawyer’s home along Livingstone Road twice, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They got away with lap-tops, clothes, car keys and other household property.

Residents said on Wednesday, the thieves, who are suspected to be operating as a group, broke into five houses along Clark Road and another in Duncan Road.

“They first broke into my house on Tuesday. They came back again on Wednesday, but we woke up before they could steal much. They only got away with car keys to our vehicles on the second raid,” said the lawyer, who asked not to be named.

A domestic worker at a house in Clark Road that was broken into on Wednesday night said her employer engaged a private security company yesterday.

“We woke up at around 3am and heard noise as someone was cutting the burglar bars on one of the windows. I screamed and my employer woke up and switched on the lights. Whoever was trying to get in ran away, but they managed to steal a fancy Nokia cell phone that was being recharged near the window,” said the domestic worker.

Their neighbours were, however, not so lucky as the thieves managed to get away with a microwave oven and a Plasma television set.

“We woke up to find the living room door open and the two items missing. However, if you want further details, come back later in the evening when my employer will be around,” said the domestic worker at the house yesterday afternoon.

She pointed out three more houses that were allegedly broken into on the same night, but their owners were away.

The thieves also stole a trailer from a house, situated along Duncan Road, which is next to Clark Road.

A resident, who identified himself as Mr Robert Moyana, said the problem of break-ins had increased in the suburb in recent months.

“The main problem here is that people mind their own business. Most people hardly know their next door neighbours and if a crime is committed, only the person who is affected gets to know about it. This makes it difficult to form an effective neighbourhood watch committee to protect our homes,” said Mr Moyana.

When Chronicle visited the suburb yesterday, most of the residents did not know that their neighbours had been robbed.

“I have not heard anything about any robbery and I do not care,” said a woman.

Contacted for comment the police spokesperson for Bulawayo, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo, said he needed to verify facts before issuing a statement.
