THE Bulawayo United Residents’ Association (Bura) yesterday held a cleansing and prayer session at a blackspot along Khami Road in a bid to minimise unnecessary road accidents. Residents and representatives from different churches gathered at the spot, near Trek Service Station in Mpopoma, for the ceremony.
The suburb’s Residents’ Association chairperson, John Gasela, said many fatal accidents had occurred at the spot.
“It’s really something that has been weighing heavily on our thoughts. We saw it necessary as Bulawayo residents to come together and engage the churches in a prayer to ask God to intervene,” Gasela said.
He said said a number accidents occurring at the spot were caused by negligent driving.
“We hope that God answers our prayers and this spirit of death leaves this place. We have lost our beloved friends and relatives and we don’t want to continue losing lives. Some of these accidents are a result of careless drivers who don’t respect life,” said Gasela.
Councillor Charles Moyo of Ward 9 said it was necessary for residents to come together in such initiatives.
“It is very important that we stay united at these times. I am currently in agreement with the residents association to install speed humps at the Khami Road intersection.
“This will help to discourage Kombi drivers from speeding,” Moyo said.
After prayers at the Khami road intersection the group moved to Gampu Government Primary School to hold another prayer for a pupil who was struck by lightning last month at the school.
