Healers (Zinatha) to work with the church organisations in cleansing their area of suspected Satanism.
The development follows confessions last month by a 16-year-old girl who stunned residents by confessing that she was part of a 60 member satanist cult that had killed 38 people in the suburb, ate their flesh and drank their blood.
On Saturday the residents working with church leaders in the suburb organised a four-hour prayer meeting in a bid to rid the area of evil spirits.
The prayer meeting was conducted despite earlier attempts to block it by one of the residents, Mr Martin Dube, the chairperson of Basic Commodities Association, who claimed to own Stand Number 1975, Cowdray Park where the prayer meeting was held.
Mr Dube had threatened legal action through his lawyer, Mr Sindiso Mazibisa, saying all those who agreed to hold the prayer meeting at the venue would be trespassing.
However, Cowdray Park councillor, Collet Ndlovu said the prayer meeting was conducted smoothly and said residents felt Zinatha should also intervene.
“The prayer meeting was conducted as planned and it progressed well. We started at 10am and finished at 2pm. We also reached common ground with Mr Dube and he apologised for refusing with the land. We are going to meet again to decide the way forward,” said Clr Ndlovu.
He said residents wanted Zinatha to be involved also so that it could play its part. We have engaged members of Zinatha and would like them to work with churches to cleanse the suburb. I am happy that people are now calm and also confident that something is being done to address the problem.
“The problem we are dealing with here is based on what we have heard and there is no tangible proof. Silwa lemimoya (we are fighting evil spirits) and that is why we want to talk to God to help us.”
The leader of the churches who participated in the prayer meeting, Pastor Ndabezinhle Thebe from Great Joy Christian Fellowship Church also said the prayer meeting progressed well.
“The prayer meeting progressed well and many pastors were there. We had invited 20 churches and residents. We also prayed for rain and asked God to help us remove the spirit of darkness in the suburb,” said Pastor Thebe.
“Our intention as churches is not only to cleanse the suburb of satanism but to spread the gospel across Cowdray Park. We urge churches to continue working together. We also need to work together to pray for our leaders.”
The alleged acts of satanism have generated a lot of interest in the city especially the suspected involvement of church leaders from the suburb, whom the juvenile fingered.
