A scenic fireworks display and the classic Nativity Scene play will be part of the entertainment at the event where all residents are invited.
The city’s senior public relations officer, Mrs Nesisa Mpofu, said the event would kick off with a road show around the city at 4pm.
“A fire tender will accompany the road show while the Salvation Army Band and Ingwe Studios will provide entertainment designed to spread the Christmas spirit. There will be a jumping castle at the Centenary Park to entertain children who will come to witness the event,” said Mrs Mpofu.
She said the Mayor, Councillor Thaba Moyo and the Town Clerk, Mr Middleton Nyoni, will depart for the park in a horse-drawn carriage at 6pm.
She said additional entertainment will be provided by groups and individuals that included Word of Life — Young People’s Ministries, Imbongi KaZulu, up-and-coming poet Bhekumusa Moyo and Caring Hands from Lochview Primary School.
“The switching-on of the festive lights will be at around 7.20pm. It is an annual spectacle that should not be missed by anyone. The sudden flood of light that comes with the switching-on, turns the scenic park into a picturesque sight that should be part of every resident’s Christmas memory,” said Mrs Mpofu.
She said the switching-on of festive lights was done at Nketa Park on Friday.
“The well-attended event was a great success and we will build on the momentum from the event to make Wednesday’s event bigger and better for residents,” she said.
Mrs Mpofu urged residents and businesses in the city to beautify their premises with traditional Christmas decorations so that Christmas “fever” spreads to all corners of the city.
