SOME residents of Gweru’s Mkoba Village 13 spent Saturday night on their feet after their household property was soaked in water following heavy rains in the area. Some residents were forced to seek shelter at the nearby Mkoba High School after their houses were flooded.
Catharine Mhondiwa, the local councillor, witnessed the deluge and was helping one of the affected families to move out of their swamped property when our news team visited on Saturday night.
Residents who spoke to Chronicle said the flooding was as a result of a poor drainage system in their area and threatened to sue the council.
“All our property, including beds and sofas were drenched. We will sue the council over these losses because this flooding is as a result of poor drainage. The city council is to blame,” said Misheck Magumise.
Another resident, Loraine Nyathi, said she had to seek shelter from a classroom block at a nearby school as she could not sleep in a flooded house.
“We don’t have any relative here in Gweru and we have no option but to put up within a school classroom block. We can’t sleep in a soaked house. I think the city council should do something to help us here. Every time there are heavy rains we face this problem,” she said.
Clr Mhondiwa said she would make a follow up with the council officials on how best to address the problem of floods in her area.
“I tabled this challenge to the council sometime back but they are yet to act on this problem. I will do a follow up and see how best we can address problems of floods in this area,” she said.
