Residents of Mutare’s Murambi low-density suburb have expressed concern over reckless commuter omnibus drivers who ply the suburb ferrying pupils to and from schools. The residents yesterday said commuter omnibus drivers were endangering the lives of pupils and the general public. A resident of Murambi, Mrs Yvonne McBurney, expressed disgust at the reckless driving antics by kombi drivers, saying they were putting the safety of children in jeopardy.
“Despite the vigorous awareness campaigns by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) at the end of the year, these kombi drivers seem to be deaf to such calls. “I am concerned over the safety of the children on board, as well as pedestrians, after we had an incident in which a pupil was run over about two years ago along the same road,” said Mrs McBurney.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa could not comment on the matter, saying police had not received complaints against the reckless drivers. The beginning of the school term last week has seen frenzied activity on the city’s roads as transport operators carry pupils to schools such as St Dominic’s High, Mutare Boys High, Mutare Girls High and Chancellor Junior School.
Another concerned resident, Mr Gibson Chikwata, who works in Murambi, added his voice to the growing chorus, saying he continues to witness kombi crews speeding on various city roads.
