Respect the handicapped: Nduna

Chinhoyi Bureau
CHEGUTU legislator Cde Dexter Nduna has urged people in his constituency to respect disabled people and give them chances to excel in life. He made the remarks at the Municipality of Chegutu Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Festival held in the town recently. Cde Nduna said a lot of disabled people have talents in various sporting and arts activities so they need encouragement rather than demotivating them stereotypically.

“Disability does not mean inability hence we should honour the disabled and give them their space in the community to enhance their capabilities in sports and other recreational activities. Due to road carnages, an able bodied person is five minutes away from becoming disabled so it is always human to respect those with disabilities,” he said. During the same event, Cde Nduna took the opportunity to encourage communities to take serious activism in sports, arts and culture as it helps aid the economy of the country.

“Sporting and recreational activities have become a source of livelihood for many and the government has benefit from it economically. A lot of nations have benefited economically through sport through revenue generation, fund saving and foreign currency attractions. People who participate in sports are easy to integrate into the society thus reducing disease proliferation, early pregnancies, drug abuse and prostitution,” he said. Sporting officials were urged to desist from corruption as they are the greatest pillars in the development of sports, arts and culture in Zimbabwe.

The festival ran under the theme: Promoting and enhancing social cohesion, community wellness, and peace and business integration. Meanwhile, a Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture official present at the festival said through the Government-initiated Community Sport and Recreation Club System, sport and recreational activities are beginning to take shape in all local authorities especially urban councils. Municipality of Kariba will on the 4th of November this year host the similar festival at Nyamhunga Stadium.
