A CHIPINGE teacher was exempted from paying $150 maintenance for an eight-year old child on Monday following his retrenchment from employment recently.
Wonder Woyo was temporarily saved from paying maintenance when he was brought before Chipinge magistrate Mrs Sharon Chipanga by his wife Patience Magodo.
Patience alleged that Woyo had abrogated his fatherly duties to fend for the child for several months.
She claimed that he was employed as a teacher and had a tractor he uses to offer private tillage services for a fee.
“I need $150 for the maintenance of his child.
“The child needs food and health care which I cannot meet alone.
“I need his help for the welfare of the child,” she argued.
However, Woyo told the court that his contract as a teacher had been terminated, so for now he had no source of income to provide for the child.
“Your Worship, my contract had been terminated recently, I had had borrowed a loan and I didn’t receive my salary this month.
“I don’t have any viable source of income on which I can depend,” he said.
The magistrate deferred the matter to a date in January 2016.
