URBAN grooves artistes Trevor Dongo and Leonard Mapfumo were left to sing alone at the weekend as a handful of patrons turned up for their debut shows in Bulawayo.
Emptiness greeted the duo when they took to the stage just after midnight on Friday at Hustlers’ Leisure Centre.
To make matters worse, the few patrons who were present ignored the duo as they continued downing their drinks as if nothing was happening.
Eventually, some female patrons warmed up to Dongo when he performed his latest track Nerunako Rwako as they sang along to the track.
He also sang Takonana, Tivanyadzise, Musikana Wangu, Ndawana Zano, No Limits and hit track Ndashamisika which received a lot of cheers.
After Dongo’s performance, Mapfumo leapt onto it with vigor and verve but his antics clearly did not attract the crowd. Even though he performed some of his famous old time songs such as Seiko, Maidei, and Kana Ndinewe, the people still did not budge.
Speaking to Chronicle Showbiz after the show, Dongo said he was grateful for the fans who had attended the show.
“I am not complaining about the low turnout from the audience. The people who are here show that they support us and love our music. I am very grateful for that,” he said.
The story was the same for sensational dancehall artiste Shinsoman (real name Romeo Antony) as he also performed for a handful of patrons at an afternoon show held at Cape to Cairo Gardens on Saturday afternoon.
