In this New Year I’m of the strong belief that one of the things we need to do to firm up our growth foundations is to revisit our inner circle. Most of us tend to surround ourselves with those who think and behave like us, who will say what we want to hear versus what we need to hear. I have learned from personal experience, we grow when we surround ourselves with those who have different thoughts but carry the same core values as we do. That is the basis of the beginning of a successful organization or collaboration.
I believe that for anyone of us to achieve a life of significance, to serve and lift others, we are not meant to do it alone. In fact, we are not meant to go through this life alone for it to have meaning. This is ironic for me to speak about. As a child I spent the first few year years of my life by myself the only interaction I had was at school. Through the growth process that I have gone through, I have come to realise the power of the inner circle. Over the years I have since developed my inner circle of like-minded individuals around me for the vision that is bigger than myself.
John C. Maxwell, wrote about this in his book, “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You.” He explains the Law of the Inner Circle, how one must be intentional in surrounding oneself with those whose strengths one does not have and vice versa. Mother Teresa said: “You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together we can do great things.”

I remember another quote by Richard Tirendi, CEO of VisionQuest 20 /20, that keeps me challenged to keep growing: “If you’re the smartest one in the room you’re in the wrong room.”
Recently, I was creating a vision statement for my new project that resonates with my heart and one of the areas in my vision was the list of names of those I wish to have on my advisory board/inner circle. I literally felt the weight was lifted when I saw those names on my vision list. We are not meant to go through this journey alone.
So we might as well bring along those who share our vision right?

The bigger question is will you remain open and objective to hear what they have to say?
