RG’s Office puts measures to curb fraudulent documents

Harare Bureau
THE Registrar-General’s Office has put in place security measures to ensure that identity documents are not fraudulently acquired by syndicates who are allegedly conniving with some officials from the department. In a statement last week, the department expressed concern over some officials who were conniving with foreigners to fraudulently acquire documents.

“We have put in place adequate security measures to ensure that no documents would be fraudulently obtained. The department does not condone any corrupt activities and it will rid itself of any rogue elements bent on tarnishing its image.”

The RG’s office urged foreigners and locals wishing to obtain identity documents to follow the normal procedures and avoid taking shortcuts.

“The law will take its course on anyone found engaging in any corrupt activities or fraudulently acquiring identity documents,” said the office.

This came after three officials from the RG’s office and an ex-employee were arrested last week on allegations of fraudulently facilitating the issuance of identity documents to Ugandans.

The four were arrested in Harare and Bindura following investigations by officials and the police.

This followed the arrest of three Ugandans who were operating as traditional healers in the city and were found with fraudulently acquired Zimbabwean birth certificates, national identification documents and passports. The three Ugandans, who implicated the three workers from the RG’s office and the office’s ex-employee, are in remand prison awaiting deportation. They were arrested by officers from the Immigration Department following a tip off.
