Rice for Bindura prison, hospital

Mashonaland Central Bureau
Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Minister Senator Monica Mavhunga on Tuesday handed over rice to Bindura Prison and the local hospital to cushion the institutions against food shortages during the lockdown period.

Sen Mavhunga promised to continue assisting inmates whose relatives were not allowed to visit them.

She thanked President Mnangagwa for de-congesting the prisons and encouraged inmates to practice good hygiene and social distancing.

The four prisons in the province now have 548 inmates following the release of over 400 under the recent amnesty.

“This year our prisons did not get a good harvest because of the drought. Government will continue assisting you and you will not starve,” she said.

“I am also aware that your relatives who used to bring you things like soap can no longer do so. That is why we came today. Use your time inside to learn skills and when you are released you can benefit from that to start your own businesses.”

The Officer Commanding Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service in Mashonaland Central, Senior Assistant Commissioner Kenny Ndebele said the timely intervention would boost their food supplies.
