Rick Fulton confident

association is expecting to send a developmental team of more than 30 juniors for this year’s edition to be held on March 17 in East London.

Fulton said the event will be used to select the national team to compete in the African Championships to be held in Morocco May

“We compete as a development team because these are closed championships and then select a national team to go and race in the Africa Championships.

“It will be a smaller team because we will get the team based on the results and South Africa does exactly the same.

“We usually send three (athletes) from each age group per category. It’s very important for our juniors because it’s an international level event. It’s a very important stepping stone for them to higher level competition,” said Fulton.

Zimbabwe will field athletes in the boys and girls Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 age groups.

The Under-13 and Under-15 will compete in a race consisting of a 375m swim, 10km cycling and 2,5km run while the Under-17 and Under-19 will participate in a 750m swim, 20km cycling and 5km run.
Fulton said he was confident the team will do well in the championships and win some medals.

“We have always done well at the South African championships. We are pretty confident we will do well especially in the Under-15 boys and girls and the Under-17, these are our two strong age groups.
“It’s going to be tough because South Africa has more juniors because it’s a bigger country than us.

“We take part in the championships every year and last year we came home with six medals. We always send a development team because it is their closed championships so it’s not a national representation.
“We are sending just over 30 junior athletes,” said Fulton.
The team will be leaving for South Africa on March 14 ahead of the competition.
