RURAL Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) director-general Mr Christopher Shumba is on his way to Kariba to assess the situation following the capsizing of a boat on Lake Kariba.
Mr Shumba confirmed the accident, saying he was rushing to the scene as rescue operations continued.
“I am rushing there. We got hit by a fierce wave. Rescue operations are in progress. I am on my way there to establish the current position. However, it’s not sounding good at all,” said Mr Shumba.
The boat reportedly capsized after being hit by a fierce wave.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) earlier said the boat was carrying 90 passengers and five crew members when it capsized, with more than 90 people feared to have drowned.
Some passengers have since been rescued and taken to safety, although police are yet to confirm the number of casualties.
Rescue operations are continuing as authorities work to establish the full extent of the incident.
