VETERAN Zimbabwe women’s bowling captain Jane Rigby has led Zimbabwe to qualify for the World Championships scheduled for New Zealand in 2016 at the just ended Atlantic Bowls Championships held in Cyprus. Rigby’s team is made up of Debbie Robertson and Melanie James and she said the Cyprus event was tough and overwhelming.
“It was a fantastic competition although the conditions were difficult. We played on a carpet while we’re used to playing on grass in Zimbabwe, but we mastered it and managed to make our country proud by qualifying,” said Rigby.
“The competitions were a huge experience for me and my team. “It was a big learning curve for us and we managed to master the techniques and set ourselves for the World Championships. We encountered some very tough competition from the world’s best bowlers from England.”
Rigby said they played through the rain and ended up catching colds, but it was good for their experience. The Atlantic Bowls Championships featured 21 countries that were divided into two sections. Zimbabwe came out fourth joining Cyprus, South Africa, England and Ireland for the World Championships.
Rigby encouraged young players to take up bowling to ensure its continued existence in the country.
