THE cricketing world braces itself as the grand stage is set for the biggest cricket competition in Zimbabwe and the world, the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers. Over the next four weeks, cricket enthusiasts will be treated to a captivating display of international cricket that promises to leave an indelible mark on the sport.

With the quest for the two remaining spots in the highly anticipated 2023 World Cup in India about to begin, anticipation hangs thick in the air. Every team has brought their A-game, and Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has ensured that this tournament will be etched into the annals of cricketing history.

The 10 teams have been divided into two fiercely competitive groups. Group A features the United States of America (USA), Nepal, West Indies, Netherlands, and the hosts, Zimbabwe. Their battles will unfold in Harare, at the hallowed grounds of Harare Sports Club and Takashinga Cricket Club. Group B, on the other hand, comprises Sri Lanka, Ireland, Scotland, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman, and they will engage in fierce contests in Bulawayo, at the iconic Queens Sports Club and Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC).

Cricket aficionados in the City of Kings and Queens are in for an exhilarating treat, as all five nations boast an array of exceptional talent. In this edition, we turn our attention to the players who will set Bulawayo ablaze with their brilliance and skill.

It would be remiss not to begin with the sensational young batting prodigy from Ireland, Harry Tector. Undoubtedly the best 50-over cricketer in the world over the past month, Tector has been in scintillating form. Named the International Cricket Council (ICC) Player of the Month for May, the 23-year-old has been on a prolific run-scoring spree, including a breathtaking career-best knock of 140 runs off 113 deliveries against Bangladesh. Tector’s sublime talent ensures that he will illuminate the tournament with his batting prowess.

While Oman may be considered underdogs in their group and the tournament as a whole, they possess a set of exceptional cricketers who can give any opponent a run for their money. One such player is the 30-year-old top-order batsman, Aqib Ilyas. Averaging a staggering 58 in 50-over cricket, Ilyas has already made a resounding statement with a century against Zimbabwe in their first warm-up match. Scoring a magnificent 115 runs from 104 balls, Ilyas showcased his immense potential, falling just 28 runs short of single-handedly guiding Oman to victory in pursuit of Zimbabwe’s imposing target of 368.

Over the years, Sri Lanka has been a breeding ground for some of the world’s finest bowlers, with legendary names like Rangana Herath, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Lasith Malinga etching their names in cricketing folklore. Now, a new star bowler has emerged in the ranks of Lankan cricket, and that is the 31-year-old seamer, Dushmantha Chameera.

Averaging an impressive 33 with the ball, Chameera has been in scintillating form leading up to the World Cup Qualifiers. His stellar performances played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s triumph over Afghanistan in the three-match One Day International (ODI) series, where he finished as the joint leading wicket-taker with six scalps, alongside his teammate Wanindu Hasaranga.–@brandon_malvin
