MUTARE’S next generation of basketball talent took centre stage last Saturday as the Mutare Developmental Basketball League, in partnership with the Manicaland Basketball Association, hosted a vibrant and highly competitive ABC Camp for Under-17s at Mutare Boys’ High School.
The one-day camp brought together some of the region’s most promising young players, with 20 athletes – 14 boys and six girls – showcasing their potential in an environment designed to challenge, develop, and inspire.
With scouts, structured training, and competitive play forming the backbone of the programme, the event highlighted the growing strength of grassroots basketball in Manicaland.
Under the guidance of veteran coaches, players were put through demanding drills focused on ball handling, shooting accuracy, defensive positioning, and overall game awareness.
The intensity of the sessions was matched by the players’ energy, as they transitioned from skill-based training into fast-paced scrimmages that tested their ability to perform under pressure.
“The level of commitment shown by these young athletes is encouraging. With continued training, they have the potential to compete at higher levels,” said coach, Tonderai Shasha, reflecting on the day’s performances.
Shasha emphasised the importance of mastering fundamentals, noting that strong basics are key to building confident and complete players.
He praised the atmosphere at the camp, describing it as both competitive and supportive – an ideal combination for player development.
“The importance of mastering fundamentals, as well as the strong basics, are key to building confident and complete players cannot be underestimated. It is also commendable to note that the atmosphere at the camp was both competitive and supportive. That is an ideal combination for player development.”
Beyond the drills and competition, the camp also fostered camaraderie among participants through interactive activities, reinforcing the importance of teamwork both on and off the court.
Organisers hailed the event as a major success, pointing to the visible improvement in players’ skills and the enthusiasm displayed throughout the day.
The camp forms part of an ongoing holiday development programme aimed at strengthening the basketball pipeline in the province. As momentum continues to build, initiatives like the ABC Camp are proving crucial in shaping the future of the sport, offering young athletes a platform to grow, compete, and dream bigger.
