Riverbed mining remains banned

Cases of small-scale miners that continue to mine in National Parks despite a Government ban will be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This was said by Permanent Secretary for Mines and Mining Development, Mr Onesimo Moyo, in an interview yesterday.

“There is no change to the Cabinet directive that bans riverbed mining; that directive still stands, no one is allowed.

In September last year, Cabinet directed that all mining activities along streams and national parks be stopped with immediate effect, so as to conduct mineral exploitation in an environmentally friendly manner.

In the case of national parks, Government was motivated by the need to preserve the country’s wildlife, which is key to the country’s tourism revival strategy.

However, while other miners heeded the call, some continue to operate in flagrant disregard of Government directive.
