Road accidents exhibition opens

THE Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has opened a traffic safety exhibition in Gweru aimed at conscientising members of the public on the need to observe road rules.

The exhibition which is being held at the Gweru Military Museum has on show pictures of car wreckages, limbs from accident scenes and injured people.

Also on display is a picture of a foot that was lost by a passenger two months ago in the Pfochez Bus Kwekwe accident which claimed the lives of 31 people.

The foot among other body parts is still to be claimed from Kwekwe District Hospital mortuary.

TSCZ managing director Obio Chinyere said the Gweru Military Museum exhibition comes at a time when there are worries over the increase in road accidents in the country.

“We’re exhibiting at Gweru Military Museum and we’re still to decide whether or not to make the exhibition a permanent thing at the museum. We’re at the museum at the invitation of the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe so that people who visit the museum also have a chance to learn about traffic safety,” said Chinyere.

He said every Zimbabwean must be concerned about road safety in the wake of the increase in roads accidents.

“The year 2016 hasn’t been good, we’ve recorded a number of fatal road accidents and it’s a cause for concern for us because we don’t want to see the unnecessary loss of lives on the road.

‘‘It should be everyone’s responsibility to take heed of traffic rules and regulations so that we arrive alive. Speed thrills but kills,” he said.

According to TSCZ there were 2,341 accidents in 2015 up from 2,215 in 2014.

In 2015, 129 of the accidents were fatal up from 112 the previous year.

“180 people were killed in 2015 up from 144 in 2012. 1,040 were injured in 2015 with 1,133 being injured in 2014,” reads part of the statistics on display at the exhibition.
