The rehabilitation of the 60km Alaska-Copper Queen Road that commenced in 2018, is yet to gather pace after this year’s works were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The road links Mashonaland West and Midlands Province’s Gokwe North District.
It also shortens the distance from Harare to Gokwe. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development was allocated US$7 million for the first 10 km stretch,US$3 million and an additional $12 million.
Mashonaland West Province’s resident engineer in the Ministry of Transport, Engineer Simbarashe Gomo, said Covid-19 stalled the road’s upgrade.
“We had set up a target of completing 5km of the first 10km stretch in July for five months, but, the nation was forced to divert some of its financial resources to battle the pandemic.
“Our target was also to work on other critical areas along the entire road including bridges,” he said.
