MATABELELAND North primary schools will meet in Nkayi today, to battle it out in the inter-district track and field championships.

More than 500 athletes will converge at the Nkayi High School sports ground, in an event that is run by the National Association of Primary School Heads (Naph).

Competitions begin today and end tomorrow afternoon.

The athletes are drawn from Binga, Bubi, Hwange, Lupane, Nkayi, Tsholotsho and Umguza Districts.

Naph Matabeleland North chairman, Nkosinathi Moyo told Zimpapers Sports Hub that they are ready for the championships.

“We are ready to roll. All roads lead to Nkayi. The competitions start at 2pm and the teams are prepared to give it a go. I have all the confidence this time, our Districts will do well to give us the best competition ever,” said Moyo.

This year’s edition, according to Moyo, has received overwhelming support from various stakeholders in the business community.

“Our championships have received the support they need and we are grateful to business partners, who have always been on our side. There’s our all-weather friend, Clemence Kunzekweguta of Zero Suppliers, Funeral Tech, Sports Zone and Dingani Publishers, AFC Bank, ZB Bank among others that have chipped in.”

Zero Suppliers has a long and rich history of sponsoring schools athletics, spanning more than two decades.

He said they anticipated to have an exciting and competitive event, adding that districts did well in purchasing essential athletics equipment.

“This time, the Districts are ready. In fact, what pleases is that all the districts have bought the proper equipment for events such as javelin, shot put and discus. In the past we were improvising. Also, it is pleasing to announce that we managed to train our officials and coaches, heading towards the provincial finals. We aim to have our athletes mentored by people with knowledge and adequate training in athletics,” said Moyo.-@NkosieLegend
