A suspected armed robber who targeted university students in boarding houses appeared in court yesterday after he was implicated by his alleged accomplices.
Irvine Meki (28) appeared before Harare regional magistrate Donald Ndirowei charged with armed robbery.
He was remanded in custody to February 23 and was advised to approach the High Cough for bail considerations.
The court heard that on May 2 last year, Meki and his accomplice Stephen Dick, who is already in custody for this case, and Giant and Boyka, who are still at large, connived to rob the students residing at a boarding house in Avondale.
They went to the house armed with a pistol and a knife. They gained entry into the yard through the main gate which was not locked before proceeding to the main house where they broke the French door to gain entry.
The gang threatened to shoot the eight occupants of the house if they did not surrender their property.
They allegedly searched all the rooms and took five cellphones, six laptops, fuel coupons, handbags, satchels and cash amounting to US$200.
They sold one of the stolen phones to one Lancelot Dongorere and it was tracked, leading to the gang’s arrest.
