the melee.
The suspects allegedly shot the taxi driver on the head before shooting a police detective who was also in the same taxi as he tried to flee from the scene.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the name of the deceased taxi driver was still being withheld until his next of kin have been notified.
Inspector Zhanero said Detective Constable Innocent Mupoperi, who was shot and injured on the leg, was recuperating at Chiredzi District Hospital.
He said police had since launched a manhunt for the unidentified suspects.
“The name of the taxi driver is still being withheld until we notify his relatives but the police officer who was shot is in a stable condition and recovering at Chiredzi District Hospital.
“We have since launched a manhunt for the suspects and the net is closing in on them,” said Inspector Zhanero.
On December 5, the taxi driver was travelling with an Ipsum vehicle from Masvingo to Chiredzi carrying six passengers including the suspects and the police detective.
On approaching the Chekenyere area the suspects said they wanted to disembark. The cabman stopped his vehicle but immediately after that one of the suspects pulled out a pistol and shot him once on the head and he died instantly.
Sensing danger, the police officer who was in the taxi bolted out and tried to flee but was shot on the leg and fell to the ground.
The suspects then demanded cellphones from all the passengers and got three Nokia phones and cash amounting to nearly US$500.
They vanished from the scene while the passengers went to report to police in Chiredzi.
The body of the taxi driver was taken to Chiredzi district hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
