TWO Chitungwiza men who were involved in a spate of armed robberies targeting taxi drivers, robbing them of their cash, cellphones and vehicles have been arrested.Michael Chimuti (33) and Brian Mapanga (29) terrorised taxi drivers in Chitungwiza and Harare threatening them with a knife and tying them with shoelaces before taking away their vehicles.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the development.
“Michael Chimuti and Brian Mapanga both of Chitungwiza, were arrested in connection with armed robberies that were committed on pedestrians and taxi drivers,” said Supt Nyathi.
“They were arrested in Chitungwiza during one of their escapades as one of the complainants shouted for help and members of the public came to her rescue and they are being charged with robbery.”
Chief Supt Nyathi said investigations were underway to ascertain if Chimuti and Mapanga are not linked to other robberies and theft of motor vehicles in Harare.
“The four vehicles they stole were recovered by the police. We advise members of the public who might have fallen victim to armed robbers to approach the central investigations department’s homicide and theft squad sections,” he said.
