Police warn travellers against private cars

POLICE in Harare have warned the public against boarding private cars as many are falling prey to robbers who are offering lifts to pedestrians before robbing them of their valuables on the way.This follows two separate cases of robbery involving a white Toyota Ipsum that were reported last week in Borrowdale.

Acting Harare Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tarirai Dube confirmed the two incidents and urged members of the public to use public transport and avoid travelling during odd hours.

“We received two separate incidents of two people who were robbed last night in Borrowdale and from both reports we discovered that the vehicle being implicated by the victims is a white Toyota Ipsum without registration numbers,” she said.

“We are warning the public to be on alert for this white Toyota Ipsum without number plates and also to avoid boarding private transport.”

Asst Insp Dube said on the first incident the victim boarded a white Toyota Ipsum without registration numbers at Sam Levy proceeding to Hatcliffe.

The vehicle had four men on board including the driver. While on the way it is reported that one of the men grabbed the victim’s neck while the other one drew an iron bar before assaulting the victim with it.

The driver stopped the vehicle and both of them searched the victim and stole his US$130, Blackberry cell phone and his shoes all valued at US$490 before speeding off.

Asst Insp Dube said in the second incident the victim boarded the same white Toyota Ipsum with four men on board at Dandaro complex intending to go to Domboshava.

On the way it is alleged that one of the men started assaulting the victim with an iron bar on the knees while the others searched his pockets and stole his US$5 and dumped him before they sped off.
