Robbers target cars at social gatherings for hijacking

Motorists and party-goers across Zimbabwe are being warned to exercise caution, as criminals are increasingly targeting vehicles parked at weddings, parties, nightspots, and other social gatherings.

Security company Guard Alert revealed that hijackers are now using a new tactic: requesting that the MC or event host announce that a particular car is “blocking” them.
“When the vehicle owner steps out to move the car, they are attacked at gunpoint. Criminals are aware that you have your keys and force you to drive the car out of the premises with them inside,” said Guard Alert in a statement.

Car owners are urged not to rush when their vehicle registration number is called during an event.
“If you need to move your car, take your time. Do not go alone. Be in the company of at least two people. Avoid going directly to your car and check your surroundings carefully from a distance before approaching it,” the statement advised.

Hijackings at public gatherings are not new. In 2024, three armed men hijacked a Ford Ranger Twin Cab at gunpoint in Luveve suburb, Bulawayo, after tracking the owner from a local night spot. The vehicle, valued at over US$40 000, was recovered in Gwanda less than 24 hours later.

Guard Alert warned that social gatherings have become key targets for hijackers, and vigilance is essential to avoid falling prey to these criminal tactics.
