Police in Harare on Friday impounded a car used in a robbery in Kambuzuma. Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tedius Chibanda said: “We impounded a Toyota Raum which had just been used by three unknown robbers in robbing Tawanda Marondera (23) of his cell phone (Samsung Galaxy) while he was going home. Investigations are in progress to establish the owner of the car.
“We suspect that this gang is among armed robbers who are terrorising pedestrians in Harare.”
It is alleged that on the day at around 9pm Marondera got off a commuter omnibus at Kambuzuma Drive turn-off and proceeded walking along Kazingizi Road while talking on his cell phone, a Samsung Galaxy.
At the same time the unsuspecting Mr Marondera saw a Toyota Raum which drove past him before making a U-turn and drove towards him.
It is reported that as the car came nearer him it suddenly stopped and one of the three men inside the vehicle came out and seized Mr Marondera’s phone before jumping back into the car and sped off.
Marondera shouted for help from other pedestrians while running after the vehicle.
A well-wisher who saw Mr Marondera running after the car stopped his vehicle and gave Marondera a lift to chase after the robbers’.
However, the robbers’ car burst both rear tyres prompting them to stop and jump out to change them.
At that same time it is alleged that Marondera and the good Samaritan arrived.
Upon approaching the robbers it is reported that they started apologising to Marondera and gave him back his cell phone.
It is alleged that during the confrontation Marondera managed to grab the car keys from the robbers’ vehicle.
After that Marondera and the good Samaritan went to Kambuzuma police post and made a report.
When police arrived at the scene the three robbers had vanished in the dark leaving their vehicle which was then impounded.
Police discovered that the vehicle had two different registration numbers on the rear and front.
Insp Chibanda appealed to members of the public to desist from using cell phones when walking in the dark areas as this could attract thieves.
