THREE men have been handed 16-year prison sentences by the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court for carrying out a spate of violent robberies that took place in Mutorashanga in November last year.
According to a statement issued by the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), Godfrey Mapanzure (33), Lovemore Matanga (39), and Tawanda Manokore (38), were each sentenced to 21 years in jail, with five years suspended on condition of good behavior.
The court heard that on November 8, 2024, the trio, armed with a fake pistol and machetes, terrorised several villagers and stole their belongings.
Their first victim, a 72-year-old man, was robbed of US$100, identity documents, and clothing before being left in the bush.
The robbers then targeted Ignatious Chimpaka (65), at his home, breaking in and pointing a pistol at him.
They fled when neighbours were alerted to the commotion. Later, they raided the home of a 53-year-old victim, whom they assaulted with machetes before stealing a 32-inch television, a solar battery, a solar inverter, cellphones, and a Nissan AD van.
The three men were apprehended after a high-speed chase from Mutorashanga to Harare.
