SEASONED campaigner Robson Saurombe is leading in the Golden Pilsener Harare Open professional golf tournament after shooting an impressive round of six-under-par 66 in the opening round at Chapman yesterday.
The score became one of the best in the Zambezi Tour to be recorded at Chapman.
Saurombe said he was happy to be on top of the situation going into today’s second round of the 54-holes event.
“I am happy to have taken the lead and I hope to continue with the good form tomorrow (today) and see how it will end.
“I put a lot of hard work and I hope it is now paying off.
“I give credit to my drive which just got right today (yesterday) and that helped me to shape up my game,” Saurombe said.
The player who changed clubs recently from Titleist to Teylormade said they helped him so much as they are still new.
“I will only aim for a level par in the second round and then do the rest on the final day.
“The course was playing well and I hope to maintain the good form through and through and I am happy that some people still believe in me,” added Saurombe.
On second place was a eight-way-tie that included three South Africans who managed a one-under-par 71.
Gary Thompson, playing his second professional tournament was on second with Ignatius Mketekete, Nickson Masunga, Ryan Lang, Steven Ferreira and South Africans Simon Thabang, Thanda Mavundhla and John Bele all on 71.
The Goldern Pilsener Harare Open defending champion Dale Howie was on level par 72 together with Tongo Charamba.
The event also saw the return of Ryan Cairns who was on the sidelines for the past five months because of a wrist injury.
Cairns’ return saw him carding a seven-under-79 in the opening round.
