Mike Saujeni (13) is an entertainer and nothing is going to get in his way. Not even the wheelchair that is his means of movement from point A to B. The student at the Jairos Jiri School for the Disabled is a dancehall artiste whose creative lyrics have seen him being called “Winky D” after the popular musician.
He captured the hearts of all those who were present at the institution on Tuesday for the 33rd anniversary commemorations on the passing on of the late philanthropist Jairos Jiri.
Jairos Jiri founded the school to help children with disabilities get an education because most schools do not have the special facilities and teachers. The school is seriously underfunded and needs urgent assistance, but that has not hampered the style of its star students like Mike and all the others like the marimba band and poets who put up performances at the commemorations.
When Mike performed one of his songs, “Martial Arts” the crowd really got going. He had to perform it three times as he gave in to repeated demands for an encore.
“Dombo harina karate, simbi haina karate,” he chanted, urging even the most gifted martial fighter to run when attacked with a weapon.
He was not done as he continued dishing out ghetto related lyrics that left many wondering where he gets the skill to put together words in such an alluring manner.
Added to the power of composition, he is full of energy and gifted with a wonderful voice, making him a full dance hall chanter by an standard.
To him, music is a passion and a calling and this is where his future lies as he is determined to pursue a career in the field.
“I love music and I know I can sing. I was born a musician and I will work hard to fulfil that dream.
He has been inspired by his sibling.
“My brother, Tatenda, is my inspiration and he is the one who teaches me some of the things. He is also into music and helps me come up with some lyrics,” he said.
He said despite being named Winky D”, he does not copy the celebrity artiste, but comes up with his own stuff.
“These are purely my own lyrics. I listen to Winky D, but I did not copy his lyrics. I learn from him, but I do my own songs,” he said.
The teenager has many other songs to his name including “Kalife kemughetto” and “Babie rekusabhabha”.
He is surely a dance hall star in the making that he only needs a producer to tap his talent.
