National team coach Alistair Zowe, his assistant Sylvester Mutusva who is also the U-19 coach and Leonard Nhamburo are leading the selection process and will shortlist the candidates when the tournament ends today. It is Southern Rocks, however, who have dominated so far – winning three of their five opening matches.
In the first match of the day Rocks beat Mountaineers by 84 runs in a match Susan Kudzibatira scored 26 runs off 30 balls before they beat Mashonaland Eagles by 34 runs on the second day. In their third match on Wednesday, Southern Rocks beat stubborn Tuskers by 51 runs.
Last year’s winners Mashonaland Eagles have failed to produce the same form that saw them crowned champions in Mutare. Eagles lost their first two matches to Southern Rocks by 34 runs before losing by 48 runs against Mountaineers, having been bowled out for an embarrassing 29 runs.
Women’s co-ordinator for Zimbabwe Cricket Caroline Nyamande expressed satisfaction with the level of competition so far.
“The girls are playing well and they are showing a lot of courage to do well. We have players like Loreen Tshuma from Tuskers. She took seven wickets from 66 balls, which is a good economical rate. We are looking forward to an exciting finish and if all goes well names of those who made it to the national team will be released on Monday,” Nyamande said
Zimbabwe and South Africa are the only African countries that will battle it out with eight others in the final World Cup qualifying round in November.
