From the vibrant, resilient streets of Mbare emerges a powerful new voice capturing the complex emotions and aspirations of Zimbabwe’s young generation. Romana Rose, born Tapiwa Davison Kacheya, is rapidly ascending as a defining artist in the Afrobeat and Afropop scene, blending soulful melodies, traditional Zimbabwean rhythms, and contemporary trap beats into a sound that resonates deeply with his audience.
Rose’s story is intrinsically linked to his Harare upbringing. Raised in a modest, culturally rich family in Mbare, his music is steeped in the day-to-day realities, struggles, and vibrant energy of township life. Before music became his sole focus, he balanced the demands of a day job as a tracking officer in the telematics industry with nocturnal songwriting sessions. This unique background – an early exposure to technology and the relentless Harare hustle – forged his authentic lyrical style and emotional delivery. “My sound is a fusion of Afrobeat, Afropop, and R&B,” Rose explains. “I’m influenced by artistes like Ruger, Victony and Takura, but I also draw inspiration from global sounds and cultures.”
Beginning his musical journey seriously around 2023-2024 at just 17, Rose honed his craft in the underground scene. His poignant lyrics, exploring mental health, personal loss, the burning ambition of ghetto youth, and the raw ache of heartbreak, quickly set him apart. His debut track, “Nhema,” marked a significant entry, but it was the self-directed video for the soulful “Rangarira” (featuring 3ill) that truly sharpened his profile and showcased his lyrical prowess. Tracks like “Kana usipo,” “Ndinzwewo,” and “Mhamha” (ft. Young Nova) solidified his reputation for emotional depth, earning him comparisons to international sensation Rod Wave for his heartfelt “emotional trap” sound. Fans champion him as an authentic “voice of the streets.”
Romana Rose is poised for his most significant release yet: his debut EP, titled “MOI ET TOI” (Me and You), scheduled for release soon. The project delves into the intricate dynamics of romantic relationships. “I’ve always been fascinated by the complexities of human connections,” Rose shares. “Love and relationships are universal experiences that everyone can relate to, and I wanted to explore the highs and lows through my music.”
The EP is conceived as a dialogue between two lovers, navigating the inevitable challenges partners face and seeking understanding and closure. “The title represents the duality of relationships – the ‘me’ and ‘you’ that come together to form a connection,” Rose elaborates. “It’s about the conversations, the love, and the growth that happen in between.” Drawing from personal experiences – “I’ve gone through some ups and downs in my personal life, and those experiences heavily influenced the themes and emotions in the EP” – the project promises vulnerability and authenticity.
Collaborations remain key, with Rose highlighting the track featuring 3ill: “Yeah, the track with 3ill is a highlight for me. We vibed really well on that song, and it adds a fresh dynamic to the EP.” He also holds a special place for “Pandaikuda,” stating, “It’s a song that came from a real place for me, and I feel like it captures the essence of the EP.”
Despite his rapid rise, Romana Rose remains grounded, driven by a clear mission. He aims to use his platform and music to empower Zimbabwean youth, change negative narratives, and build a unique sonic bridge between cherished Zimbabwean traditions and the pulsating energy of modern Afrobeats and global sounds. “For me, it’s about authenticity,” he says on balancing genres with storytelling. “I draw from my own experiences and emotions, and I try to weave those narratives into the rhythms and melodies.”
Rose sees his target audience broadly: “Anyone who resonates with the emotions and stories I’m sharing. It’s for the young lovers, the heartbroken, and anyone looking for music that speaks to their soul.” He hopes listeners deeply connect: “I hope listeners feel seen and understood. I want my music to be a reflection of their own experiences and emotions.” Through the music, he wants to convey messages of “love, hope, and resilience. Life is a journey, and I hope my music can be a source of comfort and inspiration.”
Fans can expect the music to leap off the recording soon. “Yes, I’m planning to tour and perform live shows. I want to connect with my fans and bring the music to life on stage,” Rose confirms. Looking further ahead, he is excited about evolution: “I’m working on new music, exploring different sounds and themes. I’m also looking to collaborate with more artists and expand my reach globally… I want to push the boundaries of Afrobeat and Afropop while staying true to my artistry.” – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
