Tragedy struck at around 11am during a lesson when the roof of the makeshift classroom at Munhondo Secondary School caved in.
Fourteen-year-old Marble Chakombera, three other pupils and their teacher were taken to Darwendale Hospital.
Chakombera died on admission.
Two pupils were discharged while the teacher and other child were transferred to Banket District.
In an interview on Wednesday, headmaster Mr Smartwell Chigede said the mishap occurred while the Form Two pupils were having a Mathematics lesson.
“We believe this was caused by the incessant rains that we have been receiving lately,” he said.
Mashonaland West Governor and Resident Minister Faber Chidarikire visited the school on Wednesday, while Deputy Education Minister Lazarus Dokora consoled the family yesterday.
Governor Chidarikire said the school was in a sorry state and more needed to be done to create an appropriate learning environment.
“By mere sight, this building is a danger to pupils and staff and as Government we believe more needs to be done to uplift the standard so that it is safe,” he said.
He said his office would work with relevant authorities on the matter. The school opened its doors to pupils in 2006 after converting a tobacco barn at Maryland Farm.

Mrs Patuma Chiwaura said her only child’s death came as a shock and she never saw her after she was injured while she was at work.
“The painful thing is that the tragedy struck when I was at work and when I came home after being told of the incident she had been taken to hospital,” said a grief-stricken Mrs Chiwaura.
