IN observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Rotaract Club of the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) hosted a fundraising campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer and its impact on the lives of women and the community as a whole.
The campaign was hosted at the university’s campus on Monday, where members of the organisation sold pink-frosted cupcakes, the symbolic colour for breast cancer, to students and faculty members.

The money raised will be used to assist breast cancer patients and is set to be donated to a hospital in the community. The organisation has not yet decided which hospital will be the recipient of the donation.
Sanelisiwe Ndlovu, the organisation’s community service officer, said that as an organisation, it was important for them to raise awareness about the issue, as it is part of their mandate.
“As the Rotaract Club of Nust, we want to shed light on breast cancer and raise awareness about it.
That’s why we decided to take on this initiative to raise awareness and collect funds that will be later donated to breast cancer patients.
“The fundraiser was not only about raising money but also about engaging with students and educating them. We want people, especially women, to be open to talking about breast cancer and to be aware of how to detect it early,” she said.
She said that the exact amount of the funds collected during the fundraiser is still undisclosed as they are still in the fundraising process and are open to donations and collaborations with other organisations.

Ndlovu said that they are determined to make an impact and are going to be hosting another campaign on 2 November 2024.
“The selling of pink cupcakes was to serve as a prelude to another breast cancer awareness campaign on 2 November which will be in collaboration with The Leos, Toastmasters and Zimbabwe Medical Students Association (Zimsa),” she said.
Ndlovu urged people to come to the event and make their own contribution towards the fight against breast cancer.
