The Rotary Club of Msasa on Monday donated two classroom blocks worth over $30 000 to Three Sisters community near Caesar Mine in Mazowe West constituency. The donation will result in the reduction of the distance that children were walking to get to other secondary schools in the area.
The school (Zvehoto), which occupies 24 hectares, will start operating in January, with an enrolment of 360 pupils. Rotary Club is a non-governmental organisation that consists of professionals in different spheres of society, who contribute to various community projects that the club undertakes in varied ways in terms of their flair and resources.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the club president, Mr Samuel Chikowore, said helping communities in need was their major thrust.
“We are working hand-in-glove with a group called Vimba Trust, who were the pioneers of this project,” said Mr Chikowore.
“They received some funds from a Rotary Club in Australia and also approached us for help.
“We have come in more in a supporting role to make this project come to fruition. In Rotary, we have what we term six areas of focus and one of them happens to be basic education and literacy.
“We also have water and sanitation. When you look at a project like this, it caters for both the basic education and literacy and water and sanitation. We would want good ablution facilities to go with the school and we are also going to drill a borehole here.” Ward 24 councillor in Mazowe West constituency Ottilia Chiwanza said this was a dream come true.
“I moved a motion in 2010 in council after realising that school children were walking long distances of 17km to Caesar Mine and other schools. We concluded with the Ward Development Committee that this could be the central position to have another secondary school.
“After council accepted the proposal, we faced challenges to construct the school and engaged some partners, Seventh Day and Hillbright, to construct a boarding school, but this failed. We wrote to Government for help and we were given materials to construct a single block in 2012, but the material was wasted,” she said.
