THE Rotary Club of Matopos, a club that seeks to promote cultural values and leadership among young people while also ploughing back to the community, on Friday conducted an induction ceremony for its president and her board at the Cresta Churchill hotel.
The night’s festivities were held under the theme “Rotaract in Africa”, with all the guests at the event wearing traditional African dress.
President of the club’s parent body, Rotary Club in Matopos, Sichelesile Moyo presided over the ceremony which was also graced by poet Ernest Makinna who entertained those present with his poem, First Rains.
Speaking during the ceremony manager, at the Cresta Churchill Hotel Brian Nyakutombwa, also the member of the parent club emphasised the importance of individual values that are encouraged and cultivated in our own African culture on the young generation.
“Young people are our leaders of tomorrow and as an African society they are values and customs which we need to bestow on them at a tender age,” he said.
The club’s public relations officer Sufficient Tsikira said that the club had already held events that were aimed at raising funds for the less fortunate in Bulawayo would be embarking on similar initiatives in the future.
“Last week we participated in a sponsored walk alongside with our sister club, Rotaract Club of Belmont and the proceeds from that went to charity. We have also donated to King Gorge VI Home, toys to Mpilo hospital and visited St Francis Home,” he said.
Guest speaker at the event Alex Saurombe, the Country director at BMG Mining Private Limited encouraged the club to continue producing young people with a passion for leadership and a desire to uphold cultural values.
“Rotaract is a platform where young people and different generations are trained to be future leaders by equipping them with the necessary tools and guidelines to succeed in our African society,” he said.
The ceremony on Friday saw the induction of Thandi Banda as the president of the club.
