The Rotary Club of Highlands has secured a US$120 000 grant from the Ocala Rotary Club in Florida, United States, to upgrade Musingwa Primary School in Muzarabani.

The upgrade will see the construction of two classroom blocks, an ablution block, installation of a running water system and electrification of the school. It is envisaged that upon completion of the project, the school will be granted public examination centre status.

Rotary Club of Highlands president Mrs Obertina Matoushaya said: “Learners from this school have been walking a distance of about 10km to access an examination centre and they were exposed to danger.

“We then decided as a club to partner with our global friends in upgrading the school so that it meets all the requirements from the Ministry (of Primary and Secondary Education) for it to be granted examination centre status.”

She said as Rotarians, they have seven roles they play in communities, which include education, community empowerment, provision of water and sanitation, maternal health and environment. Ocala Rotary Club representative Mr Tom Coene said the club wants to facilitate children’s access to education.

“We are happy to be part of this project and when I told my colleagues about the situation here, we managed to get tremendous support.

“By contributing to the project, we are expressing how much we care about these young children and how we want them to access better learning facilities,” he said.

On Thursday, the Rotary club of Highlands together with their global partners from Ocala Rotary Club travelled to Muzarabani to inspect Musingwa Primary. The two classroom blocks, which are currently under construction are now at roof level, while construction of ablution block is on course.
