REIGNING Miss Universe, Sheynnis Palacios, was given a rapturous reception yesterday evening when she touched down at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare.
The 24-year-old Nicaraguan beauty was met by Miss Universe Zimbabwe chairperson, Colonel Miniyothabo Chiwenga, Miss Universe-Zimbabwe Sakhile Dube, representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, fashion designers and local models.
Speaking to journalists shortly after arrival, Palacios said the tour, which is part of her reign, was an eye-opener.
“It’s our first time in Zimbabwe and we are so happy and grateful to be here. I am so excited to be here to know about your roots, to know about your gastronomy and most importantly get your energy,” she said.
Palacios, who is set to visit Victoria Falls and other tourist attractions, said the tour was part of her reign as Miss Universe to market other countries.
“This is the 28th (country we have visited); we never stop and we are so happy for that platform.
“It’s an incredible platform that I got from Miss Universe and every single country that makes me happy.
“Thank you Zimbabwe for welcoming me and my team and for making us feel very, very comfortable.”
Palacios said she will promote Zimbabwe after this visit.
“Now Zimbabwe is the focus of the world thanks to all of you, the national director and other models.
“We celebrate the empowered women, we are proud of you. We are who we are and where we come from.”
Meanwhile, the popular traditional dance group, Hwamanda Ensemble, charmed Miss Universe with their earth-pounding and well-choreographed acts.
The group was pampered with cash at the airport. Fans jostled to catch a glimpse of Miss Universe who joined male members of Hwamanda Dance Troupe on the dance floor.
