Former Black Rhinos Queens and Mighty Warriors forward, Rufaro Machingura, was laid to rest yesterday afternoon at Zororo Park Cemetery.
Machingura passed away after a long illness at her home in Waterfalls home last Thursday.
She was 30.
Machingura’s ex-Mighty Warriors’ teammate, Rudo Neshamba, said her death was a big loss to them. She described Machingura as one of the cheer leaders in camp, and said she would always cherish the time they spent together.
“There was never a dull moment in camp with Mafidi. Her jokes, the farfetched stories, the songs and the dances; one would always wonder how she ever came up with all those,” said Neshamba.
“In the field of play, she was ‘The General’. She was the most technically and tactically gifted player I have known. Mafidi was easy to work with because she as a team player.
“We won matches and cups together, from the Under-20s to the senior team. Those were the best days. She served her country well.”
Former Zimbabwe Women’s League Chairperson, Mavis Gumbo, described Machingura as one of the finest players to ever don the Mighty Warriors’ jersey.
“Rufaro was one of the finest players to wear the Mighty Warriors’ jersey. She had a desire to win and see the team succeed.
“Rufaro has left a trailblazing football legacy which is difficult to erase. May her family find solace and comfort from the Lord,” said Gumbo.
Doves took care of all burial expenses after the family appealed for assistance.
