JUST when fans thought they had seen it all in Dynamos’ 5-0 defeat at Rufaro on Sunday, two Scottland substitutes combined for a moment of brilliance to score the fifth goal.
The scorer was Khama Billiat, and such refined finishes is what define him.
But it is the player that gave the sublime assist that raised eyebrows. Nathan Mutasa.
This is the player who has had a fair share of critics but still looked calm in the final third, taking matters into his hands.
It was one of many of Scottland’s relentless moments, and at that point, he could have tried his luck, but he delivered a pass that spoke volumes about his composure.
“I don’t want to say much, but I want to remain focused on my work,” Mutasa said after the game.
His words mirrored all that his new coach Norman Mapeza is all about, doing the talking in the field of play. “Of course I am delighted to have provided my first assist for the club. I hope to continue in that trajectory,” he added.
This was just one of Scottland’s many classy moments. Mutasa had come off the bench to replace another goal scorer Knowledge Musona. Since his arrival, Mutasa had too many eyes on him.
His stints at US Torcy in France, Cultural Leonesa in Spain and Granada CF’s reserve setup counted for nothing in the court of public opinion.
Could this be the turning point?
“ . . . The fans are integral and get me going through thick and thin. They are important for me and the club as well. Everyone needs a support system. I am promising them more and letting them expect more,” he said.
Scottland’s title defence starts on Sunday when they face HardRock at Chahwanda in what could be a difficult match.
