ZIMBABWEAN rugby clubs have received an invitation to take part in the David Phiri tournament which will be held in Lusaka, Zambia, this coming weekend. Zambia have indicated their interest to engage Zimbabwean clubs to add an international flavour to the event which in the past only used to host its local clubs.

Old Hararians chairman  Losson Mtongwiza said  they are looking forward to the  event.
“We are looking forward to the event, we have always had a good relationship with the Zambian clubs which is wonderful.

“This week we are going to select the squad which afterwards will get some few days of training. This will be our first time to take part in the David Phiri tournament and we believe we will do well,” said  Mtongwiza.

Harare Sports Club and Old Georgians are the other clubs that have been invited for the David Phiri tournament.
Meanwhile, defending champions Harare Sports Club are eyeing the big prize and their flyhalf Teddy Hwata wants to be the top conversion taker this season.

Saturday’s games saw Sports Club dismissing Matabeleland Warriors 52-12 in the Lion Lager National League match at Old Georgians.
Hwata top-scored with 12 brilliant conversions and only missed one which he believes it was because of the weather which was windy.

He said he was going to ensure that he becomes the top scorer and gets selected for the Cheetahs or the Sables this year.
“I believe in myself and my aim is to get selected to play for either the Cheetahs or the Sables. I enjoyed our match against Matabeleland Warriors, we did a lot of team work which was good.

“We did not start our game well in the first half but in the second half we did a wonderful thing because we are now in the third place on the log and we will be heading to the top if we continue working hard.

“Our game structure was excellent and as the defending champions we want to retain our title and it is good that we are going forward with our aim,” said Hwata.

Winger Stephen  Hunduza also contributed to Sports Club’s victory when he touched down with three tries which made him the top try scorer for his team.

Hosts Old Georgians also had a good outing when they thrashed hopeless Gweru Sports Club 85-0.
