THE Midlands Matabeleland Rugby League makes way for the Zimbo Tournament featuring Old Militonians, Busters, Bulldogs and Western Panthers at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds. The tournament kicks off on Saturday and is set to run for the next four weeks. George Mukorera of Western Panthers said: “The league will make way for the Zimbo Tournament but that doesn’t mean players will not be active during the course of the tournament. The tournament runs for four weekends. At the end of the tournament, the top team will win a cup and some consolation prizes,” said Mukorera.
He said the tournament would also be used to select a provincial team that will play the Botswana National Team on July 4. “The game against Botswana will be a tough encounter and selectors need to pick the best squad from the players at the tournament,” he said.
Rugby in the province, Mukorera said, was on a low and the tournament was most welcome as it will give players something to play for.
“Such initiatives are important for the sport as they encourage players to get involved in all initiatives associated with the sport. There are a few corporates involved in rugby resulting in a lot of talent going to waste. If more sponsorship was channelled towards the sport, we would have a strong provincial team and more representation in the national team,” he said.
Fixtures: Western Panthers v Bulldogs, Old Miltonians v Busters.
