Rugby star back with a bang

TADIOUS Dzandiwandira says he contemplated to quit the game after suffering what looked like a career-ending injury back in 2017.

The 30-year-old was turning out for South African rugby side Primrose when he dislocated his knee five years ago and he had to return home after a lengthy treatment spell.

He contemplated leaving the game he loves so much but then decided to risk it at the start of this year.

And Dzandiwandira, who is also a boxer, has had a remarkable season after leading his team Harare Sports Club to a Sevens Rugby Series whitewash this year.

Dzandiwandira was instrumental in Harare Sports Club’s triumps in the Paramount Garments, Exide and Sable Chickens 7s tournaments this year.

He also inspired the club to glory in the Zambia Independence 7s competition staged late last month where he was voted the player of the tournament.

The backliner won the Player of the Season’s first runner-up accolade behind teammate Godfrey Magaramombe during the Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s annual awards last weekend.

He also walked away with the best backliner of the season’s crown.

“I came close to shedding tears when I won these accolades. I am a player who once considered to leave this game.

“I dislocated my knee and the injury was nasty. I was playing for Primrose in South Africa and when I came out worst in the tackle, I wrote myself off as soon as I realised the knee was off its position,” said Dzandiwandira.

“It was a painful experience and I told myself it was over.

“That was back in 2017 and for the three years which followed, I was receiving treatment but never did I think that one day I would be back in the game.

“It’s miraculous I find myself playing this game again. It’s been a painful five years but being back is incredible.

“I am feeling exceptionally happy given that my team managed to win all the sevens series. And to be able to bag two accolades during the awards function is something special. “I am looking forward to a better season next year.”

Dzandiwandira said he wants to push his boxing career far as well.

“I am also a boxer and for me it feels funny. I would like to become a renowned champion in this game.

“I had a single bout this year in Victoria Falls and I won. I am looking forward to winning a lot of them.”
