JOE Rugwete retained his position as the Zimbabwe Karate Union president unopposed at an election held on Saturday in Glendale. This will be his third term in office since taking over from Simba Chikutu in 2012. The other members of the previous executive that retained their posts include secretary-general Steven Charandura and treasurer Morag Flight.They will be joined by vice-president Mugove Muhambi, who takes over from Eric Chinembiri, who did not seek re-election.
Malvern Chomusora and Gerald Muusha were voted into the athletes’ commission for semi-contact and full contact styles respectively. The new executive will run karate affairs for the next two years.
Rugwete said their immediate task is to appoint national technical directors and marketing executives for semi-contact and full-contact styles. “On Wednesday, we are meeting to appoint the technical directors and marketing executives for both semi-contact and full contact.
“We are also going to appoint a committee to draft a national team selection policy. There were sentiments from our members that national teams are not being selected fairly, there is a bias.
“So our first job in this new term is to correct that, then we will have a special general meeting before mid-year to adopt the policy,” said Rugwete.
The meeting also saw the executive and stakeholders adopting the 2016 calendar of events and budget.
The meeting was attended by five provinces — Mashonaland East, Harare, Midlands, Matabeleland North and Masvingo — as well as 13 styles affiliated to ZKU.
