THE electorate in Ward Six of Mutasa North Constituency has been called upon to politically empower women by voting for Cde Regina Barara who will represent ZANU PF during tomorrow’s by-election.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa made the call during a campaign rally for Cde Barara in Honde Valley yesterday (Thursday).

The Ward Six seat fell vacant following the death of Councillor Edward Kavhuru in a road accident in October.

Cde Barara will battle it out with Ms Barbara Nyamuruhu of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

Addressing the gathering, Minister Mutsvangwa said: “A few women participated during the last harmonised elections, but President Mnangagwa used his executive powers to appoint women into positions of authority. That shows how much President Mnangagwa has everyone, including us as women at heart.

“You need to vote for the right candidate and Cde Barara is that candidate. Let us continue empowering women because that is the President’s wish to have equal representation, both in Local and Central Government,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa said after voting for Cde Barara on Saturday, the electorate should overwhelmingly vote for President Mnangagwa and ZANU PF during the 2023 harmonised elections.

“As you will be voting, remember what President Mnangagwa has done for the country since he assumed office in 2017. Zimbabwe has been developing immensely since then and that should be commended. The opposition has proven that it has failed, judging by the state of affairs in urban settlements where they control.

‘‘They lack transparency and accountability, but the revolutionary party is not like that. We are accountable and have the people at heart. Go and vote for Cde Barara, she is the one the party has chosen,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa applauded President Mnangagwa’s re-engagement and engagement efforts as well as his leaving no one and no place behind mantra, saying it is proof that Vision 2030 is attainable.

Addressing the same gathering, ZANU PF Manicaland Women’s League provincial chairperson, Cde Happiness Nyakuedzwa urged party members to remain united and support fellow women aspiring for political offices.

She urged them to shun violence, jealousy and despondency against other women.

“As a united front, all ZANU PF members should go in their numbers and vote for Cde Barara. You should vote for the people’s choice into power.

“Once you vote a woman into office, she will empower you because she knows best what people in this area wants,” she said.

In an interview, Cde Barara expressed confidence of romping home during tomorrow’s by-election.

“The opposition party failed the people here as there was no development during the tenure of the late Councillor Kavhuru. The people have woken up and have realised that voting for opposition councillors will retard development in the area. We will bring the seat to the ruling party, ZANU PF,” she said.
