Rural rockstar: DJ 20’s passion propels him to success

DJ 20 isn’t your average musician. Hailing from a rural background, his talent and ambition have propelled him far beyond his humble beginnings.

His music is a compelling blend of traditional and modern influences, captivating fans nationwide with its unique sound.

Despite the challenges of growing up in a rural area, DJ 20’s dreams have never been deterred.

Boasting a national anthem — Imithwalo — the song dominates events, leisure spots, and radio stations across rural areas. DJ 20 leads a 15-member band, Orchestra Bambadzi Sounds, featuring guitarists, dancers and management.

The rhumba-inspired track, Imithwalo has been around for a while but is now experiencing a surge in popularity, especially in Matabeleland. Similar to how Magwaza’s Kokotsha, Insimbi ZeZhwane’s GPS, and Ndolwane’s Ukufunda Akupheli spread like wildfire, DJ 20’s song is omnipresent.

Travel to Tsholotsho, Nkayi, Bulilima, Mangwe — you’ll hear it blasting from bottle stores, homesteads, vehicles — absolutely everywhere.

DJ 20’s story is one of triumph and inspiration. His journey to national fame began in rural Bambadzi, bordering Botswana. Growing up, he was immersed in rhumba music and culture, fostering a deep love for it.

As a teenager, he self-taught guitar and experimented with music mixing and production. His passion for music and creating something new soon led him to perform at local events. Recognition followed quickly, and he began securing gigs across the country.

DJ 20’s experimentation with different styles led him to a unique fusion of traditional and modern music, resonating deeply with audiences nationwide. His popularity has skyrocketed, and major festival appearances, award wins and radio play across Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa seem imminent.

Saturday Chronicle caught up with the South Africa-based artiste to delve into his upbringing, musical journey and future plans.

“My full name is Njengelizwe Ngwenya and I was born and bred in Bambadzi. I use the stage name DJ 20 which was inspired by how I dance. The reason I started the music journey is because of the love and passion I had and I officially made this journey in the year 2017.

“The journey has not been easy since there are a lot of competitors and it requires a lot of talent and dedication but I always try my level best to make my supporters happy,” said DJ 20.

DJ 20 called the past year his breakthrough, marked by success and renewed appreciation for his earlier work.

“In 2023 I won the Song of The Year in Rhumba News where I got a certificate for being the best. My past works include the albums Ndabezitha and BuKalanga (2017), Dlozi (2019), Game Over (2020), Back Door (2021), Nkunzi Mavava (2022) and Sekuvele Okunye (2023).

“Right now my focus is on doing a music video for Imithwalo,” said DJ 20. — @mthabisi_mthire
